BERTHE VILLA, PELOPONNESE, MANI
A historical residence in Peloponnese
Villa Berthe is a remarkable, award-winning historical residence located in Kardamyli, South-east Peloponnese, in Mani renowned as one of the most exquisite residences in Greece.
In 1996, the owner’s family, a prominent British author with a deep appreciation for Greek culture, entrusted the house to the Benaki Museum. envisioning it as a sanctuary for intellectuals and scholars seeking an inspiring setting for their work and studies. This arrangement also enabled the museum to rent the property, welcoming the public and creating resources for the preservation of the house and its treasured artefacts.
Villa Berthe stands out as one of Greece’s most breathtaking properties. Nestled within a Mediterranean garden, where cypress and olive trees mingle with fragrant shrubs and cascading wildflowers, four distinct low stone buildings create a picturesque retreat; the main house, a studio-office building, and two additional secondary buildings. The primary residence was designed by architect Nikos Hatzimichalis in close partnership with the owner, culminating in its completion during the mid-1960s.
The villa boasts a sweeping view of an expansive landscape, creating an ambience of tranquilly and calm, perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of city life. Nestled within the verdant and meticulously maintained garden, a rejuvenating swimming pool awaits, ideal for unwinding on sweltering summer days and enjoying delightful gatherings with loved ones. The pool area boasts a delightful arrangement of sunbeds, perfectly positioned beneath the gentle shade of lush trees. Should you desire to venture beyond the villa, just beneath the house, a narrow path, adorned with stone steps, winds its way down to a quaint pebble beach.
This historical villa, a seamless blend of rustic allure and sophisticated grace, emerges as an idyllic refuge for those seeking a rare residential encounter with the true essence of Greek hospitality all within a setting rich in charm and character, while honouring the villa’s unique heritage.
